Why test Magnetic Strength?
A magnetic pull test is a reliable and widely used method throughout the industry for determining the strength of a magnet. Strength is important, as it determines how effective the magnet will be in its given application. A magnetic pull test can be used in comparing two magnetic devices that look very similar on the outside, but may have different magnetic circuitry or magnet material on the inside, resulting in a more, or less, effective magnet. Magnetic pull strength testing can be performed on magnets with round or flat surfaces and on either permanent or electromagnetic circuits.
Principle
Pull strength is determined by using a calibrated scale and a ferrous test piece. A ferrous metal plate is used to test plate magnets and conveying rail, while a ferrous metal sphere is used to test magnetic tubes. The ferrous object is attached to the snap swivel hook on the scale and drawn away 90 degrees from the magnet until it is released. The pull strength, or pounds of pull it takes to release the test piece from the magnet, indicates the strength of the magnet.
It is important that each pull test be conducted with consistency to ensure that an accurate reading is achieved and recommend that you use the average of several pull tests to determine your reading.
